In small groups, bare chested, knee deep in murky water, they sieve gravel for hours until they spot the glitter of one tiny diamond. In town, we interview an illegal trader who compares diamond dealing to the blood diamond trade in a warzone. He takes out a small paper package from his trouser leg and slowly unwraps a cluster of uncut jewels. He carries them to bribe his way out of any difficult situations. The De Beers diamond cartel is keen to stop the illegal diamond trade. A spokesman maintains that most of Angola'’s diamonds are smuggled out the country and are therefore denied to the people of Angola. “We would like to develop a first class diamond field and build a proper mining operation. In this way the country can be further developed.” Local mining companies depend on private security firms to guarantee their safety. While filming, bandits with grenade launchers and machine guns take our reporter by surprise. After much bargaining, she is finally allowed to leave the area. More information about the video content bellow: 1. The oil and diamond-rich country is currently rebuilding at full swing after suffering from civil war for 27 years since independence from Portugal in 1975. Now the country of 19 million is finally at peace and is going through a dramatic rebirth. 2. The capital city of Luanda is now one of the most expensive cities in the world. Forget Tokyo or Moscow—Luanda wins. The high prices can be put down to the massive infrastructural investment taking place in response to the relentless gross-domestic-product growth from mining operations. 3. Ruacana Falls, one of Africa’s most beautiful natural wonders is located on the border between Angola and Namibia. 4. Angola’s traditional music is the semba – Brazilian samba is believed to have originated in Angola, where it’s known as “semba”. The two are very similar. Angolan semba was danced to celebrate different occasions and is known as the music of the sea. 5. Angola’s national tree is the majestic Imbondeiro – There is one tree that is special to Angolan. There was a popular belief that God planted this tree, also known as “Baobab” upside down. The unusual looking Imbondeiro tree can be found growing all over the country. Their growth rate is determined by ground water or rainfall and their maximum age, which is subject to much conjecture, seems to be in the order of 1,500 years. 6. Angola is the only country in which the Critically Endangered giant sable antelope lives. The antelope is confined to central Angola, where it is primarily located in the Luando Reserve and Cangandala National Park. With the onset of civil war in Angola (1975 - 2002), most of the protected areas in which the giant sable antelope was found were evacuated, and have been left unattended and unprotected for more than 25 years leading to a decline in their population of 90%. Total numbers surviving are estimated at 200-400 individuals. 7. The government of Angola requires religious groups to petition for legal status with the Ministries of Justice and Culture. To get legal status however they need to abide by the Law on Religion, passed in 2004, which requires that a group should have more than 100,000 members and be present in 12 of the 18 provinces. This has made it hard for the estimated 70 - 80,000 Muslims, mostly migrants from West Africa and Lebanon, to practice freely and the government - which has disputed claims of being anti-Islam - is known to have closed mosques, schools, or community centres. It is a fantastic sight, which could only have been created by nature. But every year, there is a veritable explosion of life along the Skeleton Coast. In October, the sea-lions come to these coasts to give birth. At this time of year, Cape Cross is home to the largest colony of sea-lions over one hundred thousand of them. Outside the breeding season, males of the species are rarely seen they start to arrive at the end of October, in order to mark out their territory. The first European to set foot on this coast was the Portuguese, Diego Cao, in 1486. A year later, another Portuguese navigator, Bartolomé Días, with his three ships, sailed into the bay, seeking protection from a storm. After many attempts, he finally managed to land, and named the bay 'Angra Pequena' (small cove)*. But it was not until 1883 that the first stable settlement was established, when the German navigator and merchant, Adolf Lüderitz, reached an agreement with the head of one of the Nama tribes. Lüderitz bought the bay for a relative small amount of money and sixty rifles, in order to set up a whale processing plant here. A few months later, Kanzler Bismark declared Namibia a protectorate of the German Empire. In 1904, war broke out between the Nama and the Germans, and Lüderitz became the first prisoner of war. But the real industrial and economic boom came later, with the discovery of the diamond mines. In just four years, the town was transformed from a small, remote fishing port, into one of the most important cities in Southern Africa. English/Nat A plea by Britain's Princess Diana for a world-wide ban on land mines has sparked a political row in her homeland. Her comments, made during her trip to Angola, have angered some members of Britain's ruling Conservative Party who say her stand appears to be at odds with official British government policy. An unidentified government minister called Diana "ill-advised" and a "loose cannon." The controversy cast a shadow over her visit to Kuito - believed to be the most mined town in the world to inspect the damage done by 20 years of civil war. Princess Diana, who is in Angola on a four-day mission aimed at focusing world attention on the evil of mines, toured Kuito, believed to be the most mined town in the world. It was here that the two sides in the 20-year Angolan civil war faced each other, just 20 yards apart across the main street. Back in Britain, a war or words is taking place following Diana's plea on Monday for a world-wide ban on all anti-personnel mines. This statement provoked a sharp reaction from some ruling Conservatives who criticised her stand because she appears to have departed from the government's policy. One unidentified government minister said she was "ill-advised" and a "loose cannon." In Angola, the princess, who has been briefed on the political row her comments have caused, said she was just trying to help. SOUNDBITE: (English) Q: Ma'am a government minister at home has said you are a loose cannon by supporting this campaign, do you have any reaction to that? A: "Oh dear, I'm only trying to highlight a problem that going on all around the world, that's all." SUPER CAPTION: Diana, Princess of Wales Many newspapers in Britain led with the story Wednesday saying Conservative ministers were furious at Diana stepping into the debate on landmines and seemingly aligning herself more with the Labour opposition rather than with government policy. The Conservative government says it is working toward a global ban, but as an interim step it would permit governments to stock mines which disarm themselves after a period of time. The opposition Labour party, however, supports an immediate ban on all mines. In London, a defence analyst called her comments naive. SOUNDBITE: "I think there's no doubt at all that the advice Diana, Princess of Wales has been given is naive and lacking. I think that there are certain areas that her people don't fully understand and that's the difference for example between anti-personnel mines and anti- tank mines. If she had been better briefed, she could have actually made a lot more of this. SUPER CAPTION: Paul Beaver, Jane's Defence Weekly, Defence Analyst Diana saw for herself some of the mines the Red Cross seeks to ban, which have been used in Angola's civil war As she went about her tour, the British Ambassador to Angola said the controversy in Britain has not affected the tour at all. SOUNDBITE: "I don't think there's any disquiet at all. We're very happy that the princess has come here, it's a most successful visit and I hope sincerely that the rest of her visit will be equally successful." SUPER CAPTION: Roger Hart, British Ambassador to Angola De-mining experts from Britain's Halo Trust took the Princess on her tour of the devastated town. All around were minefields and she was warned not to step off the pot-holed tarmac roads and paths. They explained their work to her. SOUNDBITE: SUPER CAPTION: Paul Heslop, Halo Trust Diana, who has been blocked from going to Bosnia and Cambodia because of the high level of danger, would not have seen such devastation before. Afterwards, Diana flew out from Kuito to the war-torn town of Huambo. ANGOLA, AFRICA — The largest diamond discovered in Angola, Africa was announced Monday, Feb. 15. The 404.2 carat gem was mined by Lulo Diamond Project, a partnership between Australia's Lucapa Diamond Company Limited; Endiama E.P., Angola's national diamond company; and private investor Rosas & Pétalas. According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the diamond, found in Angola, could be worth more than $20 million in Australian currency, or $14.3 million USD. And according to the announcement by Lucapa, New York-based diamond retailer Yehuda tested the new diamond's color and clarity and categorized it as a Type IIa stone, meaning it's virtually flawless. It is the largest found at the Lulo mine in Angola, where the project commenced in August 2015. The Lulo Diamond Project explores a 1,148 square-mile plot of land in central Angola and the area has so far produced more than 60 "large special diamonds," the company said. It is the 27th largest recorded diamond in the world, the first being a 3,106 carat gem, called the "Cullinan." It weighed in at 1.3 pounds and was discovered in South Africa in 1905. That stone was cut to adorn the royal scepter, one of Britain's crown jewels, and is on display at the Tower of London. The second largest weighed 1,111 carats and was found in November 2014 in Botswana. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoWorld, where we animate the biggest headlines from around the world.
